Introduction
I am a former Ernst & Young partner, retiring in 1999. Since retiring I have pursued a varied career, including a portfolio of Non-Executive and Trustee positions. I am recognised as an authority on becoming a Non-Executive Director and have coached a wide range of senior executives who are retiring from full-time employment, wish to add one Non-Executive role to their full-time role, or are looking to enhance their performance in their current full-time position.
My approach is both personal and practical. I draw on my extensive network of resources to develop an action plan for the client which is bespoke to their needs. I only work with people I have met through referrals or through corporate programmes.
Approaches
I am flexible in how I approach each client. Described below are representative programmes.
Comprehensive Coaching Programme for Retiring Executives
For the retiring executive who needs time and help to understand what their options are, where to look, who to meet and how to prepare their CV to be fit for purpose. Often this is the first time in many years the individual has had to think about next steps and their professional network may be limited to those they know from their company and customers. This programme includes a comprehensive face-to-face meeting schedule, CV development, network introductions, interview training and telephone follow-up.
At the conclusion of this programme the executive should have the necessary tools and confidence to embark on a portfolio career.
Non-Executive Short Programme
There will be some executives who are more confident of their abilities and have a clear picture of the kinds of roles they would like to pursue post-retirement. Their needs are slightly different but the process is similar to that described above.
Senior Management Non-Executive Development Programme
Many leading companies provide their senior managers with a development opportunity to broaden their knowledge and improve their networks. I have run programmes for companies such as Sainsburys to position senior managers for a not-for-profit role which will take no more than one day a month out of their full-time role. While the process is similar to the Non-Executive Short Programme, the conversations are different and focus on what the manager wants to achieve, how it will benefit them and the company, and where they feel they could make a difference, both functionally and with industry knowledge.
Senior Management Coaching
Whether moving up to a new role or expanding skills to take on additional responsibilities, senior executives often need an independent person to discuss their concerns, approaches to problem resolution and to develop confidence to take on challenging opportunities. Working with CEOs, Finance Directors and Operations Directors is a particular specialty.
Benefits of these Approaches
• Provision of a reasonably priced service which is professionally managed and delivered.
• Peer-to-peer conversations that enhance the client’s understanding of the market, their own motivations and practical advice for achieving both short-term and medium-term objectives.
• CV development and coaching provided by an experienced coach with specific experience in this area.
• Access to a wide variety of industry thought leaders and speakers.
Getting Started
Any of these programmes could start immediately. The nature of the service is that it may take several months to complete depending on the individual’s schedule and priorities.
